What vehicles are roomy enough for traveling with an entourage, but not going to eat my wallet in gas?

My main car is a compact that I'm not looking to replace but rather to supplement. Because its a compact, traveling with the family is impossible. We currently have to take 2 vehicles on the road. I'm looking for a large minivan/van, or suv that will be comfortable for long distance travel and vacations that's not terrible on gas mileage and has plenty of space for adults (anywhere from 2 - 6), 2 small dogs, 1 large 100lb dog, and 1 cat PLUS all the necessary room for luggage. I'm thinking of buying this one used since it'll basically be for travel and for carting around the monster dog so he doesn't drool all over my tiny car. It'll need to be comfortable and roomy but not necessarily stylish. It'll need to be durable too; we have family spread out all over so we travel alot and I'd really like it last a while. Any ideas of what vehicles I should be considering? Thanks for any advice!

After thinking about your question, there is exactly...nothing that meets all your requirements. So, you will have to lower your standards and figure something out here. If you have to take 2 cars, even if they both get 30mpg, that means that you are actually using 1 gallon every 15 miles between the two cars, plus wearing out 8 tires instead of 4. So, what I'd say, is the only vehicle that can meet MOST of your requirements, is something like a Ford Excursion Diesel. Great diesel engine, more fuel efficient thant he gas engnes, and in my opinion better than the GM equivalents.

We need a luggage cart, STAT!
